Counselling
What is Counselling?
The aim of counselling is to give you a
safe place to come to talk with a trained and experienced
person in order to try to work through what you are feeling
and finding difficult to handle.
You might be having difficulties with relationship
or having family problems. Or finding it hard to cope with
angry feelings, or sadness or depression. You might have been
physically or sexually abused, or have memories of distressing
experiences. Someone close to you might have died. Or you
might be unhappy and want someone to talk to.
Someone you know may have suggested counselling
or you may have heard about it yourself. Essentially counselling
means having someone to talk to in a supportive and safe place
in a way which helps you understand yourself better.
The Saheliya counselling service is free
to enable anyone coming for counselling to understand themselves
better and more able to cope with their difficulties or distress.
Counselling is provided in English and a variety of Black/Minority
Ethnic languages. Counselling is voluntary - you decide that
you want to see a counsellor and then you are responsible
for keeping your appointment with your counsellor or phoning
us to tell us if you can't.
Free childcare is offered for under 5's.
Counselling at Saheliya is provided by:
Trained and experienced Black/Minority Ethnic female counsellors
who have an understanding of issues of race, gender, culture
ad how these impact on the mental health of Black and Minority
Ethnic women living in Scotland. The counsellors receive regular
support, supervision and ongoing training. All Saheliya counsellors
work the British Association for Counselling code of ethics
and practice.
